New state fund to help fortify Oklahoma homes: Opinion

A new state fund has been created to fortify Oklahoma homes with construction and other amenities, making them safer against harsh weather. The frequency of wind and hailstorms in the state, combined with rising inflation, has led to high homeowner insurance rates. To mitigate these costs, Rep. Mark Tedford introduced House Bill 3089, establishing a revolving fund that provides grants to retrofit or construct homes with stronger materials. The Fortified Home program, which has been successful in hurricane-prone coastal regions, certifies roofing systems to withstand severe weather. Participating homeowners can expect immediate benefits through insurance premium discounts, and fortified homes are less likely to sustain storm damage. The grants will be available on a first-come, first-served basis, with priority given to lower-income applicants and those living in areas prone to catastrophic weather. Investing in home resilience not only prepares for future storms but also creates a more affordable and long-lasting future for homeowners.

New home for OSU Agriculture features collaborative outdoor spaces

Oklahoma State University Agriculture is partnering with OSU Landscape Services to develop several outdoor gathering spaces around the new cutting-edge facility for the Ferguson College of Agriculture, OSU Ag Research, and OSU Extension. The east side of the building will feature an inviting outdoor patio, plaza, and grand pathway that accentuates the surrounding buildings. The landscape design aims to create a space for engagement, education, creativity, relaxation, and socializing. Students and interns have contributed to the development of the landscape plans, which incorporate preserved elements from the historic Dairy Building. The outdoor patio will serve as a gathering spot for students, faculty, and staff, featuring tables, benches, and a living plant wall. The living plant wall, spanning 20 feet wide and 8 feet tall, will enhance well-being and connect with nature. The New Frontiers Agricultural Hall, expected to open in fall 2024, represents a significant advancement in teaching, research, and Extension efforts at OSU Agriculture.
