The family of a longtime Laredo-area ranching family is about to transform a working ranch into a master-planned community. The Walker Family hopes to convert 13,000 acres into commercial and industrial manufacturing businesses, thousands of homes and multifamily communities, and an airport. Central to the Talise development was the discovery of a vital water source within the family’s land holdings.

The project, to be known as Talise, is expected to require a $1.6 billion investment from the Walker Family. Kandy Walker added, “Our family believes the time has come that our region of Texas has this ambitious scope and range of project built here, so all Laredoans, Webb County, and South Texas residents have an opportunity to take advantage of all that Talise will bring.” Spearheading the project is SE Legacy Development, founded by the Walker family.

The project will be centered in an unincorporated area in Webb County, North of Laredo, Texas, at the intersection of I-35, US 83, and Texas 255 in South Texas.

Southern Land Co. Adds VP of Single‑Family Land Acquisition » Dallas Innovates

Southern Land Company has hired Jeff Poole as the company’s new VP of single-family land acquisition. Industry veteran Jeff Poole has been hired as vice president of single-family land acquisition by Nashville-based Southern Land Co., a national real estate developer of mixed-use, master-planned, and single-family communities.

Poole is based in Southern Land’s Plano office, the company said.

“We have had continuous success with designing, developing, and delivering exceptional high-density, mixed-use, master-planned communities that afford true multigenerational living opportunities, as well as small-scale, more intimate communities,” SLC President and COO Brian Sewell said in a statement. “With Jeff’s arrival at SLC, we’re set to further strengthen this side of our portfolio and, ultimately, provide more ways for people to live in best-in-class communities in the very best locations. Jeff has the experience, skillset, and drive to identify tremendous opportunities.”

In this newly created role, SLC said Poole is responsible for expanding its community development pipeline as well as SLC’s single-family homebuilding division, SLC Homes. In his new position, Poole researches and identifies community development opportunities—including specific markets, submarkets, and sites—and leads due diligence and underwriting efforts for them.

The company said Poole is dedicated to the thoughtful, strategic expansion of its master-planned community and single-family community collection, with current operations in Texas, Tennessee, and Colorado.

“SLC has a proven track record of developing high-quality master-planned communities and building single-family homes, and it is both humbling and exciting to play a key role in bolstering the company’s reputation,” Poole said in a statement. “I look forward to expanding the SLC community footprint and working with the homebuilding team to make more extraordinary living opportunities a reality.”

Poole has nearly 25 years in the homebuilding business. He spent significant time leading land acquisition efforts for national homebuilders in the Dallas-Fort Worth market, including Pulte Group, K. Hovnanian Homes, KB Home, and Ashton Woods Homes. Most recently, he spent 13 years as Pulte Group’s vice president of Land Acquisition in Dallas-Fort Worth, where he led land acquisition activities including sourcing and assessing sites, negotiations, due diligence, financial feasibility, land package preparation, and entitlements.

Before joining Pulte Group, Poole led land acquisition efforts at KB Home and Ashton Woods Homes.
