Houston faces heat risk, endangering thousands without power after storms | AP News

As the Houston area works to clean up and restore power to hundreds of thousands after deadly storms left at least seven people dead, it will do so amid a smog warning and scorching temperatures that could pose health risks. National Weather Service meteorologist Marc Chenard said on Saturday that highs of around 90 degrees (32.2 C) were expected through the start of the coming week, with heat indexes likely approaching 100 degrees (38 C) by midweek.

“We expect the impact of the heat to gradually increase … we will start to see that heat risk increase Tuesday into Wednesday through Friday,” Chenard said.

The heat index is what the temperature feels like to the human body when humidity is combined with the air temperature, according to the weather service.

“Don’t overdo yourself during the cleanup process,” the weather service’s Houston office said in a post on the social platform X.

In addition to the heat, the Houston area could face poor air quality during the weekend.

New state fund to help fortify Oklahoma homes: Opinion

A new state fund has been created to fortify Oklahoma homes with construction and other amenities to make them safer against harsh weather. The legislation, House Bill 3089, establishes a revolving fund that provides grants to homeowners, enabling them to retrofit or construct homes with stronger, more durable materials. The program is based on the successful Fortified Home program, which encourages the adoption of construction methods that can withstand severe weather.

By fortifying homes, homeowners can expect immediate benefits through insurance premium discounts offered by many insurance companies. Additionally, fortified homes are less likely to sustain damage during storms, reducing the financial burden of high wind and hail deductibles. The grants will be available on a first-come, first-served basis, with priority given to lower-income applicants and those living in areas more prone to catastrophic weather.

Investing in home resilience not only prepares homeowners for future storms but also provides a foundation for a more affordable and long-lasting future. Now is the time to fortify homes against potential impacts later.
